BRIEF HISTORY

The whole area has significant historical and strategic presence in Hellenistic Times and even mentioned by Strabo, Xenophon, etc. Each local community has to show its unique history, giving the chance to each visitor, guiding by the local residents, to discover places full of tradition, ancient ruins, historical memories and churches.
CULTURE
Ancient Acropolis of Proerna
In Neo Monastiri the visitor can access and see the “Gynekokastro”, the ancient Acropolis of Proerna, which is of great archaeological interest. The citadel of the early Hellenistic Period is the easternmost and highest point of the ancient Proerna, parts of which gradually brought to light by excavations of the 14th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in today’s Neo Monastiri. Main importance attaches to the citadel its position at the confluence of major highways of Central Greece through the mountain range of Othrys.
Remains of fortifications of the Neon Xinion Acropolis
Near the village Koromilia, on the south shore of the former lake Xiniada, over a rocky islet (Araponisi), is situated the ancient city Xinia or Xinias. Its name, according to mythology, was due to nymphs Xinies, which used to descend from the surrounding mountains to wash themselves in the waters of the lake. At the highest point of the island was built the acropolis. The ruins were surrounded by the lake and ponds from all the sides except the north, from where it was connected by a narrow strip of land. The city extended on the southwest slope. The location was of great strategic importance and therefore both inhabited during the Hellenistic and the Byzantine times.
Castle of Domokos
Medieval Castle, perched on the ancient acropolis of the city, which is kept in good condition until today. To the west of the castle are still segments of the Cyclopean walls of the ancient castle.
