Project name: SOCIAL DAY
INTRODUCTION
The project was born out of the pilot experience realised in the province of Vicenza and which was in its turn originated from a similar German initiative realised by the youth association called Schuler Helfen Leben (SHL). The initiative, denominated Social Day and carried out in Germany every year since 1998, involves students and local people in a “working day” instead of a normal school day. The incomes of this working day are used to organise and direct humanitarian projects in Europe and in the World.
The experimentation in the province of Vicenza saw the growing participation of local young people, in fact, if in the first year (2007) there were 150 participants, in 2009/2010 there were 3.000 of them. Besides, 30 local schools, 60 formal and informal local contexts (church recreation centres, youth groups, sport teams) and 40 voluntary associations took part in it.
It is from this experimental initiative that the idea of a Social Day involving different European Countries came out. The remarkable evolution of this experimental initiative, from both a qualitative and quantitative point of view, led us to invest in the young people’s desire for participation. We have noticed that young people, if asked “to get their hands dirty” and concretely deal with some challenging themes such as citizenship and rights, show an incredibly sympathetic and civil passion.
OBJECTIVES
Our aim is to realise a wide-ranging European Social Day, that is to say, a common day in all the participating European Countries, involving school students and formal and informal contexts of different European Countries.
ACTVITIES
- the construction of a European social network (organisations, schools, local associations, private local bodies, companies, informal groups) and the involvement of the whole citizenry through meetings, seminars, conferences and direct contacts;
- training and informative paths directed to students, young people, teachers and educators on themes such as active citizenship, cross-cultural dialogues, peace and justice;
- training periods and concrete experiences in local voluntary associations;
- organization by young participants of a work to be realized during the Social Day and for which they are rewarded;
- young people’s active participation at the choice, organisation and supervision of the humanitarian projects to be financed;
- Institution of a Committee of Guarantee of the project.
TARGET GROUP
Children and young people from 8 to 20 years old, coming from all kinds of schools. People from 14 to 35 coming from formal and informal local groups and associations, paying particular attention to those with fewer opportunities and to young immigrants of first or second generation. The whole local community: citizens, volunteers, teachers, groups and families, companies, local bodies, organizations of a different kind and participants in the Social Day.
PARTNER SEARCHED
We are looking for associations and organizations that work with children, teenagers and young adults for the promotion of paths of active citizenship, youth participation, voluntary work and solidarity.
DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANIZATION
The voluntary association “Gruppo Vulcano” was born in 2002 by will of four people who wanted to raise awareness about youth active citizenship using original and innovative tools. To that end, the association facilitates the dialogue among organizations of civil society, public sector and social private services that are settled in the area of Bassano del Grappa.
Furthermore, Gruppo Vulcano develops and supports initiatives of coordination, cooperation and integration among the different organizations scattered in the province, region and nation. It fosters programmes and projects in order to create opportunities of dialogue, reflection and development; among them, the “Social Day”.
The association is a non-profit organization and its goals concern social solidarity, arts, peace promotion, justice and legality, youth exchange, environment protection and co-operation with third world countries.
